Discover the power of your own voice and build confidence in this exciting Oral Communications course. This class is for quiet and loud personalities alike - together we will practice using the voice God gave us! During the semester, students will engage in fun hands-on activities like reading poetry aloud, delivering famous historical speeches, and mastering the captivating art of storytelling. The journey culminates in two major speaking projects where students will learn to understand their audience while crafting and delivering both informative and persuasive speeches. To bring their informative topics to life, students will step into the shoes of a journalist for a special homework assignment, interviewing a real-world expert of their choice. Best of all, this low-stress environment requires no rote memorization and ensures that almost all speech preparation can be completed collaboratively during class time.

Probability seems as obscure as stage magic, even to many "math kids." Using manipulatives and experiments with the whole class working together, we will remove some of the mystery of where probabilities come from and how to use them in everyday activities like playing games. From determining whether you have the winning hand to understanding how insurance premiums work to figuring out how many people have to be in the room for two to share a birthday, students will probably (maybe) find something fun and useful from this class.

*Note for Parents: We will be using playing cards and dice some weeks, including being able to predict some games that may be vaguely casino-like (poker, blackjack, etc.). I will not be teaching them how to gamble (in fact, we'll explicitly talk about why gambling is a terrible idea mathematically) and will not be particularly teaching them to play poker or other games associated with gambling, but we will use math to predict things such as the likelihood of a winning hand/winning roulette.
