High School
(9th-12th grade, typically ages 14-18)
First Hour
Choice A: Creative Writing (Warner)
Creative Writing guides students in developing multiple original pieces for a final portfolio. Throughout the course, students will read, write, journal, and participate in class discussions. They will study published exemplars from well-known authors and learn to write across genres, including fiction, poetry, drama, and creative nonfiction. Students will maintain a writer’s journal to reflect on their progress and evaluate their writing goals. In addition, they will participate in peer review within small teams, offering and receiving constructive feedback on works in progress.
Students should expect to spend approximately 2–4 hours per week on homework. This time will primarily be devoted to assigned reading; completing portions of their handwritten rough drafts (developed partly in class and partly at home); typing and revising those drafts into polished final versions submitted online; and engaging in reflective journal writing.
Students will be given free access to an online classroom (via Canvas) where they will be able to post their typed work and download the reading packet. Should they decide to print out materials, that will add to the class cost. Printing is not required.
Student Supplies: 2 differently colored pens, folder, standard composition notebook, and a journal (all items available on Shopee - click the listed item to go to the website and purchase it)
Choice B: Turning Points in World History (Carter)
